Coldwater Plants

Although not necessary for the successful maintenance of coldwater fish, aquarium plants can add considerably to the overall appearance of an aquarium. Unfortunately many coldwater fish, & in particular goldfish, can be rather prone to eating them!

However if you want a well planted goldfish tank don't lose heart, there are a number of things which can be done to reduce the risk of your fish consuming your vegetation.

1) Choose plants which are tough and are therefore harder for the goldfish to eat. In particular we recommend Anubias, Vallis (especially giant vallis), Java fern, Amazon Swords and some of the tougher species of hygrophylia & crypocoryne. You may have noticed that many of these species are tropical plants, don't let this put you off. In modern well insulated, centrally heated houses, "coldwater" aquariums are often running at close to tropical temperatures. All of the above plants will grow well at these temperatures.

2) Introduce lots of plants, if the goldfish nibble a bit, then the rest is left behind to grow. If there are only a few plants the goldfish will be able to eat them faster than they can grow.

3) Get the plants well established before you introduce your fish.

4) Don't begrudge your fish the odd plant, goldfish are primarily vegetarian, the fresh plant in their diet will keep them looking good.
