Christmas Hints and tips for a Very Merry Fishmas.... 1. Discovering your aquarium pump or heater has stopped working on Christmas morning isn’t fun, so in the run up to to the Christmas period it’s well worth checking that all your aquarium equipment is working as it should. 2. If you’re going away for the festivities, don’t be tempted to give your fish extra food before you go, fish can survive very happily for a couple of weeks without being fed, but extra food can quickly pollute the water and kill them. If you’re away for longer periods then you might like to consider buying your fish an automatic feeder for Christmas, but if you do, make sure you set it up a few days before you leave, so that you can check that it’s working correctly and not delivering too much food. For more tips on holiday care for aquariums, see our aquarium care page.   3. Whilst we might enjoy a nice Christmas drink, alcohol is not good for fish, so if you’re having friends around to celebrate, make sure they don’t use the top of the tank as an impromptu drinks tray, a spilt glass of mulled wine could prove fatal for the inhabitants.
Christmas Gift Ideas.... We strongly recommend that you don’t buy fish as a Christmas present, choice of fish is a very personal decision, further complicated by the need to ensure compatibility with the existing occupants of the aquarium. We do offer a range of Gift Vouchers from £5 value, which allow the recipient to choose their own fish. Otherwise, if you want to give a physical present we’ve a great selection of books covering most aspects of the hobby. Tank cleaning equipment from algae magnets, to Eheim battery powered glass scrapers & aquarium vacuums. Testkits make a great gift or for the more advanced hobbyist a Dennerle CO2 system is sure to be well received.  If you’re thinking of buying an aquarium as a Christmas present, then we’ve tanks to suit almost every situation & budget from the stylish BiOrb range, the extensive & popular Juwel range, to the great value Superfish aquariums and many others besides. Finally don’t forget to buy presents for you fish, We have an excellent range of aquarium ornaments and decorations whilst a packet of frozen bloodworm or other speciality food will be ideal for their Christmas dinner.
